Called My First Moose

by Mel McIntosh
(Abbotsford, BC, Canada)

Called My First Moose - Called Him in on my first try

In 1989 I was invited to go on a Group hunt when one of their regulars cancelled.
While going into camp I spotted two moose at around 800 yards.
With four men in the sleeping tent, Robert played a moose calling instructional tape. When the tape ended, we were practicing our calls.
The second day out, Mick and I stopped for lunch, and I could hear a bull in some thick timber. Glassing did not locate a bull, and we agreed I should try calling once we finished our lunch.
I let out three cow calls with only my hands cupped around my mouth. Within five minutes, a young bull walked out of the timber, crossed the creek, and I shot my first moose with a Remington 700 in .338 Winchester Magnum.
We were able to pack the hind quarters out that night, and the front half the next morning. 495 pounds to the locker but not a camera in camp.

Moose calling for the first time
by: Mark - Site Owner

Great story Mel! Moose calling is a hoot, isn't it?

I must say you guys took the bull by the horns (pardon the pun) and got the job done. Were you a little intimidated at your first call? I know I was!

A lot of hunters will not call moose because they are afraid they may scare the moose away. Personally I think it will be very difficult to scare a moose using imitation moose calls, unless of course the hunter was to employ an alarm call, which instead of being long and drawn out (such as a cow moose estrus call) was short and choppy, more like a bark.

All a hunter needs to do is... exactly what you and your moose hunting partners did... listen to a recording, practice a little, the get out and call a moose.

I look forward to each season to see what my moose calling results will be. We will be leaving soon for our annual northern trip (Sept. 24) and you can bet I'll be out every day to all my favorite spots trying to lure in a bull using my sexiest cow moose moan that I can imitate.
