Ten Feet From a Moose

by Florence Chatfield
(Mission)

We were walking along fully expecting to see grouse. I was in the lead when all of a sudden I stopped dead in my tracks -- a bull moose stood not ten feet away. Dad upped with the gun, but didn't shoot. Lyndy came up and he too aimed. Then they started to argue as to who was going to shoot... decided against it and called for the camera. Now we have the proof of "The Moose We Didn't Shoot!"

Unfortunately there was no picture attached.
I love this particular story because it was obviously a school assignment - I got 10 out of 10. I must have written this when I was 13 or 14 years old.

Hi Florence,
Thanks so much for sharing your story. That IS too bad you don't have a picture to attach.

That must have been an exciting moment for a thirteen year old!

There are not many times when we walk in the woods and can get within ten feet of a moose.

Actually, most people walking in the woods wouldn't want to get that close to a moose... especially a bull moose.
During the fall, moose can be quite aggressive; being only ten feet from a moose puts a hunter in a precarious position. Thankfully you were able to capture the memory and everyone was fine.
