1 1/2 Year Old Cow Moose

1 1/2 Year Old Cow Moose

I live in southern Vermont. Our home is on a street with many houses, each having some woods around them.

A few weeks ago a moose became a regular in the neighborhood. This is rare for our area. In 12 years this is only the 2nd moose we've seen. As cool as it is, we are about 500 yards from a highway and are quit concerned about its safety.

I believe it to be a juvenile, but really have no idea. I would love to send you a picture of it in the hopes of identifying its age and sex.

New and Rare Local Moose

Thanks for sharing your picture Frank. Although it's not the clearest, I can tell you that your assumption of age was spot on.

What you have been seeing in your neighborhood is a young female or cow moose. She appears to be about 1 1/2 years old - almost two actually. Although sometimes it's hard to tell just how big they really are.

She has a "short" face that says she's still on the young side, definitely not 2 1/2.

So she's almost one or almost two, likely the latter as a yearling doesn't have much chance of survival (10%) with her mother and pretty much zero without her.
