Idaho Shira's Moose

Idaho Shira's Moose

I took this Moose in the Swan Valley region of Eastern Idaho on my hunting partner's (Father) 58th birthday. My first and only Moose harvested to date. He was a young bull, but provided 100's of lbs of lean protein for family and friends.

Thanks for your picture and story.

Congratulations are in order for your first moose harvest. Way to go! That is a fine looking bull you harvested.

What a great birthday present for your father too!
I am sure you a right about the fact you will have ample amounts of meat to eat this winter.

Having never been to Swan Valley to hunt the Idaho Shira's moose your story prompted me to do a little digging before I responded.

Here are a few facts about the Shira's Moose:
  • The Shira's Moose is also known as the Yellowstone Moose.

  • A study by Gasaway et al. (1987) determined the A. a. shirasi subspecies of moose has the smallest mean antler size for prime bulls in North America.

  • The body of a Shira's moose typically weighs less than 816 pounds. Compared to the the Alaskan Yukon moose which can weigh a whopping 1560 pounds.
