Limited Entry Hunting Opinions

Moose Captured with a Spypoint Trail Camera IR-5

Personally, I think the Limited Entry Hunting Draw System works... seriously, "How could the government get away with a corrupt system?"

Sure, sometimes the government is not straight forward in their dealings, but the truth always comes to the surface. The LEH draw system has been in place since 1993, surely if there were dishonest workings they would have surfaced by now!

Tell us what you think! Did you get a draw this year? How long has it been since you received one?

We (my partners and I) have been diligent in putting in for the draws for years. We have until the 2012 season always put in for the same areas.

UPDATE 2013: No moose draws again for us! :-( We applied for a shared hunt in Northern BC, our group consisted of two previously successfully drawn hunters (on their 4th year) and two never applied before. We thought we'd have a really good chance of success this time... oh well.
We'll still be headed to the same area for the archery season.
Two of us were successfully drawn for mule deer doe tags.

UPDATE 2012: We didn't receive any limited entry hunting moose draws for this season. We will be heading to Northern BC for the "Any Bull Moose - Archery Only Season". This particular season is only 8 days in length... but it is during the first week of October. What does that mean to us... PRIME TIME! Peak of the rut!

We have studied the numbers, watched our success or failures in the draw... and it comes right down to a gamble.

Yup... just like gambling... you put your money down and hope your number comes up. On occasion is does... then Yahoo!

Of course there are the years following when you don't get drawn. This is because of the enhanced odds system, even this seems to work. When we are drawn, for the next three or four years we aren't. That doesn't stop us from studying the numbers and trying to second guess the system though. We do try...

More Limited Entry Hunting.

How about you? What do you think?

Rigged
by: Frustrated

My hubby and his family have been trying to get an elk draw for Vancouver island since he can remember. It's well over 100 entries. The family is big hunters for meat and yet have never been able to get a draw. Yet you hear of people getting it multiple times especially the people who work in the industry. It's rigged.

Island Elk LEH
by: Bernie

Yah... do the math...3 people EVERY YEAR...APPLIED FOR THE LEH Elk on Vancouver Island...probably pushing 100 combined years of applications .... NOTHING...ZERO...

This ALEDGED "new" SYSTEM...is NOT WORKING FOR USE.

OUTFITTERS/GUIDES....AND FIRST NATIONS....100% ALLOCATION....

Ministry of environment told me that OUTFITTERS pay royalties on big game such as Island Elk... NO PROBLEM...I WILL PAY THE SAME ROYALTIES AS THEY DO...... NO RESPONSE BACK.

While living in Alberta, in 7 years, I was awarded 4 moose LEH draws.

Here on the island I am pretty sure that some people are just lucky to receive an LEH ALLOCATION....

I only hope we get one before I am dead...

Good luck to all

Leh draws
by: Pat Haggarty

I think the LEH draw system in BC is a joke. I have been applying for 9-10 years for elk on Vancouver island and not have had a draw. While others get moose draws every year.

WTF is this shit. I think the system is corrupt.

Guys don’t know how the system works
by: Anonymous

I get somewhat fed up with guys saying we should have a points system like alberta or Saskatchewan. If you want a moose tag bad enough there’s areas in the province where you can draw every year. They’re just harder to get to. There’s too much demand for many draws to go to a reasonable points system. Guys would draw for the first while, but they would quickly become unobtainable during a lifetime.
I’d rather they get rid of the enhanced odds also (that was put in place to try to placate the whiners), all applications in a hat is as fair as it can reasonably be.

How is this NEW LEH system fair
by: Anonymous

Guides get 100% allocation.. eg. If the guide has a licence for 10 Elk on Vancouver island...they only apply and they get their 10 authorizations.

Meanwhile guys / gals like myself have been applying for Island Elk since the first years of LEH.... COMBINED WE ARE OVER 100 YRS OF APPLICATIONS IN OUR FAMILY OLONE.. !!! WTF

SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT WITH THIS SYSTEM....

AND YET...YEARS AGO, SEVERAL BIOLOGISTS, WARDENS SHOT 9 COW ELK IN CAMPBELL RIVER DISTRICT JUST TO SEE IF THEY WERE PREGNANT... THE CARCASS WERE LEFT IN TH FOREST TO ROT....

Given up on LEH
by: Anonymous

I've stopped entering into the LEH now.

Not only have I not received a tag in the last six years, but I noticed the types and numbers of tags are steadily decreasing or only exist in areas you need a float plane or a pack string to access.

My impression is that, with licence fees thrown into general revenue for so long and very little done to enhance wildlife habitat in BC, the main way of balancing out wildlife numbers used by the ministry is solely to restrict available licences.

It doesn't matter which party is in office, the attitude towards natural resources is that it's "free money" that the province doesn't have to steward, they just want you to throw money at them and go away.

Not Really Impressed with the LEH
by: Anonymous

Our hunting group puts in for LEH's religiously and we are successful about once every four years. It's hard because we don't live close to the hunting area and most of us only get two weeks of hunting time. So unless we have a tried and proven area it can be difficult to be successful even if we get drawn (Never any guarantees when hunting). Now I'm talking Moose LEH.
Let's talk Elk. As long as the LEH's for Elk on Vancouver Island have been going on I've entered draws and have not been successful. This is over a period of 25yrs. Now that's disturbing, do I think the system works, No not really. I have to wonder if I'll ever have an opportunity to have my own Elk hunt.

18 years with out a moose draw, this system is baloney, they say you have to go far in the woods to get a draw. Then why do some people get a draw every few years. Is it a location thing or what? Is there a black list..? Like come on! New hunters I know getting draws, same area where I want to hunt,.....???

Optimism turned into realism...

Why do I bother.... How long has the BC LEH been in existance..? EVERY YEAR WE (4 of us) put in for the Island Elk draw... ZERO...NOTHING...WTF

MEANWHILE the guide outfitters get 100 % fair??

So, we are told this NEW priority draw system works.... WHY IS IT WE HAVE NO FRIGGIN IDEA OF WHERE WE STAND IN TERMS OF PRIORITY..?? Like a pot of noodles...

In Alberta...there is a better system

Time to visit a reservation...they can shoot what every they want....

Sorry to say but, i think it's fixed. I've been hunting for 60 yrs and had 2 doe draws, my kids and grandkids have had nil, yet I hear and see some hunters bring home 4 moose and out the door again for 2 elk 4 deer! What is enough? What do they give back? Nothing!
I put in for a draw last year but it was blocked as to many fires; that I can understand, but then hear from people they got their game from the same area????
If your going to block that area, then block it to everyone! This is my last year for hunting and would liked to have shown my kids the rights and wrongs and how to clean and care for there kill.

Unjust LEH System
by: Anonymous

I have lived in B.C. since 1992 and I have giving up on the LEH system. Every year I have applied for 3 different LEH tags and I have never had any success. I have friends who have been successful numerous years in a row for moose. One year I applied for a elk draw here on Vancouver Island for my hunting partner due to the fact he was out of province on course. It was the first year he applied for a LEH and he was successful. The following year we both applied for elk and he received another elk draw. Not bad he applied twice and received two elk draws. I still apply for the elk draws but no other draws. I no longer hunt for moose, I just stay here on the island and hunt for blacktails. There has to be a draw system that is fair for everyone. People like myself have stopped hunting due to the unjust system here in B.C.

by: Anonymous

The lottery system as it is set up is totally FAIR. BUT we all start at zero even if we have received a draw for 15 years or 2 years continuous.
THe Govt is STUBBORN and refuses to change any system which they have installed,
They listen to NO one other than guides/outfitters and their booksmart BIOLOGISTS.
they refuse to even consider a progressive system like alberta!
Maybe the BCWF should start a petittion!!!!!

OBVIOUSLY LEH Admin are NOT Hunters
by: Anonymous

OBVIOUSLY
Yup another LEH year goes by and NO award for Island Elk....

FIVE FAMILY MEMBERS have been applying for EVERY YEAR which the LEH has be out.... and still nothing.

I had written the ADMIN people at the Ministry of Environment and recommended that the look at ALL past successful applicants for Island Elk.... "Oh no, we can't do that, it would be unfair...."

BULLSH@!

What is unfair is that THIS YEAR EVERYONE (REGARDLESS if they were successful or not) starts at ground ZERO and ALL are equal and eligible for the NEW and improved LEH Draw system.

REALLY.... I feel SICKEND by the ATTITUDE of these people who set up this system..

ONE OTHER NOTE: WHAT a pile of CRAP just to register and to sign on.... and to apply; I personally was NOT able to complete ALL applications for other family members because the system CRASHED.... 25 + times.... "We have that issued resolve, they said to me...

"Riiiiiight, I am sure you have....." my response

Good luck to ALL successful hunters

LEH Success...
by: Mark - The Mooseman

Well, our bunch of hunters didn't get a moose draw (5 entries) up in Northern BC this year or an Elk draw (3 entries) on Vancouver Island.
However, I did get a draw for antlerless mule deer (1 entry) in MU-3.
Now it's up to me to find the time to get out there in November.
Good luck to those who did get draws this year!

So..........25 years of moose draws, I have never received 1, never put in areas with odds more than 10:1, mostly 5 or 6 to 1.
Very hard to convince me the system works, when I have friends who have received draws at least every other year, sometimes each year.
Yes, the system has let me down.

I know 8 people that got it 10 years in a row! A women moved to Williams lake 5 years ago she has got a draw every year. Gave Victoria her hunters number and them came back with 13 people got it 2 years in a row? I asked how is this possible? They said they didn't know. These people were supposed to have a 50% less chance then me! Yes, something is defiantly fishy and corrupt.

Two brothers in Sooke BC have been applying for 35 or so years for Elk on Vancouver Island. They managed one draw for 2015 and harvested a nice 5 X 5 Bull.

Another friend who lives mid-island applied for Elk last year (2015) for the first time and was successful both in the draw and hunting.

Go figure? Maybe he knows someone in Victoria? lol

It's ONLY LUCK...
by: Anonymous

I would (our family) love to get a Vancouver Island LEH draw before I am dead.

How many years has the LEH been running... 20-30 yrs? I have seriously lost track of how many years the LEH has ran...

8 x 25 = 200 entries (sad story) just unlucky I guess

Our neighbour who also applies for Isl Elk has had 5 elk draws over the same period -just lucky I guess?

I wonder I'd a priority system similar to that of Alberta's LEH system would work in BC..? Perhaps? I am sure I am not the first to suggest this.

This should also apply to guides & outfitters; I would seem as if the trend is to allocate more and more tags to the guides and outfitters.

We will continue to apply for Island Elk - wish us luck

Cheers

Until you are drawn and then they decrease and you work your way up in priority each year you are unsuccessful?

LEH Draws
by: Rupert T.

I have lived in this province since I retired from the Military in 1996.
I have bought draw tags for moose in area 5 and doe LEH in the same area.

To date never had either draw. I did get one draw for antlerless elk up in area 7-21 or 22. Unfortunately, due to illness, I could not participate.

Having posted this mini rant, I have one question, why can we not have a system similar to Saskatchewan where you can get a draw every 4 years? Just a suggestion.

22 years in low odds areas, not a draw ever!
As a butcher, I have clients and friends who repeatedly get draws, this is a corrupt system, and I do know someone who stuffed the 'shared' hunt envelope with $100, yup, they got the draw!

Change the system
by: Falkland Jack

I lived and hunted in Alberta for 7 years. They have a way better system over there. Every year you don't get your draw, your priority moves up. In other words, you are almost guaranteed to get your draw after 3 years. If for some reason you can't go one year, you put in a card with a 999 code, and your priority still goes up. Way better system!

by: Anonymous

I know 7 people that put in for goat in 7-2 H, there were 2 tags up for leh draw. None of us got the tags....and the odds ended up being 3.2:1

In other words 6.4 hunters applied for the 2 tags...something is fishy I'd say.

Also know a lady that got bull moose 7-10 4 out of 5 consecutive years.....took me 12 years to get the same draw...something is stinky in leh city I'd say.

Sure the odds are against you but I have been putting in since 1989 in MU 1-10c and nothing. I keep thinking this is the year, getting used to being disappointed. I met hunters getting 2 draws back to back in the same area. I haven't been drawn in 25 years! I am convinced it is flawed. I don't even put in for draws anywhere else. I hunt the open season. One disappointment is enough.

I believe in LEH, but it has to be more fair. You get a draw for a certain species.

Don't even try for the same next year. Going on 12 years without a moose draw. This year i even shook it up a bit, I moved. It's horse crap the whole system.
Then they remove calf season. Which they should have done a long time ago, but fix it. It is BULL.come on!

LEH System is Flawed
by: Northern Moose

The other guys in our group drew two tags for Burns so we are happy.

But, the system is flawed.

We have two groups that apply each year in the same area and four in each group.

Group 1: me, my son, Steve, and Steve's step son. Group 1 has not drawn a tag for 4 years now.

Group 2: my wife, Mike, Bart, Steve's wife.
Group 2 has drawn tags last three years in a row!

They are supposed to have reduced odds!!

Four years ago Group 1 drew tags in MU7 the same time Group 2 drew as well.
If you go by what the regs say, Group 1 should have been successful and Group 2 should have had no chance this year or last.

The reduced odds system is a farce and this is proof of it!

I know another group that hunts there too and I talked to them today... they have drawn nothing 5 years in a row.

I would like to have the Limited Entry Hunting operators explain there way out of this one.

by: Anonymous

I spoke with my buddy yesterday and he tells me that two of his friends got a bull draw for this year in region 6.

It all depends...
by: Anonymous

A lot of the comments I hear about the LEH draw usually reflect whether anyone has drawn anything recently. There's always some tags that can be drawn with low odds, but usually in inaccessible areas. The hunts that all resident hunters want, of course, are rationed and low odds. It's a pity they don't bother letting you know that you didn't get anything now. It's harder to find out when they hold the draw and this year I had no idea if I should make any plans.

Draws
by: Anonymous

Ive been putting in leh draws since 1992. The first year I got a calf elk in 4-22 but didn't shoot one.

Then not one elk draw since so after they started all the draws in valley bottom. I gave up putting in for elk and bought a bow, because I want to hunt in the back country(no draws there anymore)

As for moose that's another story with odds reduced if you are successful.
It is a lottery that I buy a ticket for if I win on a 6/49 ticket my odds are not reduced, and that's the way it should be.

Odds reduction is not fair for the successful hunter.

The first morning out pow! A 654 lb buffalo. It worked for me, I seen some of the biggest buffalo that has ever been seen 3 out of 200 hundred were so big I would have not shot them out of fear of not being able to kill it with a 338 cal!

Two out of the three had a head as big as the front end of my dodge p/u I... kid you not! OMG!
